Dr Melissa Brown, PhD, RD, CSSD, LD

Current Position: Department Chair and Associate Professor in Nutrition and Public Health at the University of Saint Joseph

Dr Melissa Brown is Board Certified in Sports Dietetics with over 25 years of experience in the field. Dr Brown has worked with athletes of all levels including high school, collegiate, amateur adult, elite and professional athletes. Dr Brown also has almost as many years of experience in the field of islet transplantation and diabetes research. Dr Brown’s doctoral work and post-doctoral work was in this field and as far as we know, she is the only dietitian that has been trained to perform islet transplantations. Dr Brown still maintains her islet and diabetes research laboratory to this day. Some may wonder what the connection is between these two specialty areas and Dr. Brown’s response to that is: metabolism! The connection is fascinating and involves optimal fueling of athletes and individuals with diabetes and what happens when things go wrong.
